REACTIONS: What are people saying about the Cosmopolis Teaser?

We’ll update this post all day as more reactions tumble in. Click HERE to watch the teaser. :)

(The following are excerpts from the articles)

This makes me happy on so many levels…When they announced that he was adapting Don DeLillo’s “Cosmopolis” into a film, it was exciting because the author’s voice is so distinct and strong that watching Cronenberg insert his own perspective into that material seemed like an exciting creative cocktail….The casting of Robert Pattinson in the film is one of those fiendishly clever strokes of genius from Cronenberg…Just take a look at the trailer and tell me if it makes you smile as much as it does for me.

For those who thought David Cronenberg went soft on us with his acclaimed period drama “A Dangerous Method,” prepare to be surprised.

After his brief (and admittedly delightful) foray into the world of tea and psychoanalysis with A Dangerous Method, it’s good to see David Cronenberg heading straight back to mindfuck country with Cosmopolis, his upcoming, sure-to-be-Cannes-premiering Don DeLillo adaptation starring Robert Pattinson in his first major post-Twilight role. And what a way to leave the franchise!

Judging from the teaser trailer for “Cosmopolis,” the director’s next outing looks to be as intense, violent and sexual as anything he’s ever done.

Weird, Whacky and OG Cronenberg is Back With Cosmopolis…Definitely check out this trailer and enjoy.

Cosmopolis was already a huge question mark before the release of this first teaser. Now it’s a question mark paired with an exclamation point.

Eye stabbings, car pissings and self-inflicted gunshots to the palm pretty much invalidate any lingering Robert Pattinson hate – regardless of whether the movie is good or not. If it is as good as it looks, however, this could be the film that finally bridges the frayed relationship between you and your Twilight-obsessed stepmother. Either way, it looks like something extremely abnormal and exciting is headed our way, especially for those poor souls who think eXistenZ was the last good Cronenberg film.

The first teaser trailer for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis has arrived and it looks strange, very strange indeed; but in a very, very good way. Robert Pattinson stars as Eric, a 28 year old billionaire who has to make an epic journey across town to get a haircut. Yes, you read that correctly: a haircut. But don’t let that put you off, this trailer looks amazing.

This looks wild, and it’s only our very first tease!

Of course, like in any Cronenberg film, this simple task makes a few pit stops along the way. We see quick flashes of some naked women, a strange scene where Pattinson apparently shoots himself in the hand, and what looks to be a gargantuan rat-like creature traveling through New York. We’re really not sure what’s going on here, but we’re intrigued at the very least.

Pattinson looks ready to break free from the Twilight mold and the material itself looks to perfectly compliment Cronenberg’s style. We would love to see more than what this international teaser shows off, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until the film gets released some time in 2012 to get the whole picture.

Likelihood You’ll Actually See It: Do you like sci-fi movies with the violence turned up a bit? Do you like David Cronenberg movies? Parables about the ruins of our modern world? Are you invested in the unpredictable career of Robert Pattinson for some inexplicable reason? If so, high.

… it’s coming out in Europe in May — and it’s decidedly different than your usual Pattinson movies, as the appealingly normal-bodied star has wild nude sex, fires a gun, and acts all nihilistic.

Now here’s an upcoming film that will unite (at least) two decidedly different types of movie geeks: the old-school David Cronenberg junkies and the rabid Robert Pattinson supporters.

Cosmopolis’s” first teaser trailer has hit the web and let’s just say it’s a bit more extreme than we would have expected.

The 30-second-long French trailer — released yesterday on the film’s French Facebook — teases a performance from Robert Pattinson that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

In true David Cronenberg style, “Cosmopolis” will be noir, it will be dark, and it will be weird.

This teaser suggests that “Cosmopolis” marks the Canadian’s return to his darker, nastier ways in this near future-set thriller based on Don DeLillo’s novel.

GQ (UK):

Cosmopolis is one of our most anticipated films of the year and the first teaser trailer – all mad neon text, sex (which, if it’s sticking to the book, we’ll be seeing a lot of) and Eric Packer’s bizarre penchant for self mutilation – has only affirmed that.

Empire Magazine:

It’s a very brief little shot of pure Cronenberg weirdness, but from the looks of this, it could be Pattinson’s most interesting work in a while. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see the whole thing, but this is certainly something very different from most of the films he’s tried before.

Ok, you can pretty much stow any and all worries you may have had about Robert Pattinson in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis. This very much looks to be something of a return to an earlier tone from Cronenberg. Consider my skepticism ereased.

There’s a whole lot of surreal and disturbing imagery packed into that thirty seconds of Cosmopolis footage, to say the least. Cronenberg’s latest looks like a sort of darker character study mixed with elements of the “body horror” genre that’s long been his focus as a filmmaker (see: The Fly, Dead Ringers, Crash, etc.). Similarly, there’s a 1980s satirical vibe to the proceedings that recalls his work on Videodrome, while the existential aspects of Eric Packer’s single-day odyssey bear a resemblance to those explored in Cronenberg’s Spider adaptation. Color us intrigued to see how Cronenberg’s latest symphony of madness plays out in full, for those reasons.

Well, hello, David Cronenberg! In 2012 the director is going to unleash his second film in two years, and for those who thought A Dangerous Method was too dry, it looks like Cosmopolis might be for you. A teaser has just landed for the film, and it looks nuts.

The film stars Robert Pattinson in an adaptation of a novel by Don DeLillo, and it looks like Cronenberg’s most overtly sexual movie since Crash, and his most visually strange since eXistenZ. What we see here of Pattinson’s character Eric Packer, a young billionaire with a rather specific and dark worldview, makes him seem to fit right in the mold of a classic Cronenberg character like Videodrome‘s Max Renn. “I’m looking for more… show me something I don’t know” could have come right out of Renn’s mouth.

There was a lot of hand-wringing when Cronenberg’s original choice for Packer, Colin Farrell, was replaced with Pattinson. But it looks like the chance might have been for the better. Seeing these hints of what Cronenberg has done with the character, and how messed-up he might be, I can’t see Farrell getting the same sense of open-mouth surprise out of an audience that Pattinson will. He’s not the guy that you expect to see doing this stuff, and that’s part of why this works.

When you see a trailer for a movie like David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis starring Robert Pattinson, your views on the Twilight actor should change almost immediately. Part of that reason is that Pattinson is taking on a dark and very mature but also very twisted role. The other is because Cronenberg is involved.

A teaser for Cosmopolis has just landed, and if your views on Pattinson haven’t changed by the end of the trailer, then there isn’t any hope of you becoming a fan of the actor. The trailer is visually stunning filled with sex, strobe lights, dinosaurs, guns, and even more sex. The movie will follow Pattinson’s character who spends 24 hours crossing all of Manhattan in a limo. Of course the aforementioned visual stunners will make you believe its just more than a fancy lazy day driving.

This trailer is absoulutely wacky and I like it.

At some point while watching the first teaser trailer for David Cronenberg’s upcoming thriller Cosmopolis, you’re going to be hit with a question. That question might be, “Did Robert Pattinson just shoot himself?” It could be, “Is he urinating inside the car?” Or possibly even, “Is that a giant rat?” And the answer to any and all of these questions is invariably, “Yes.”

But one question that will probably not be answered: “What is going on?” It’s hard to say. But that only makes Cronenberg’s NSFW trailer more compelling.

In the film adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel, Pattinson plays a multimillionaire in a tumultuous trek throughout New York City over the course of a single day. But even a plot that loose isn’t really discernible in this strange, unbelievable engrossing trailer.

Cosmopolis looks pretty great, and I’m eager to see Pattinson break free of his famous mopey vampire.

Shooting your own left hand, f*ing in a limo, all kinds of crazy sh*t is happening in this teaser trailer for David Cronenberg’s new film, COSMOPOLIS. It’s as if the teaser is saying welcome to yet another Cronenberg movie, b*tch!

Huffington Post (Canada)

A teaser trailer for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis has appeared online, showing its heart throb star Robert Pattinson in a dangerous new light.

The Hollywood Reporter

Robert Pattinson will once again play dark and brooding, but his latest role proves he can do more than pine and sparkle.

The Twilight star plays a 28-year-old playboy billionaire who goes for a deadly limo ride in David Cronenberg’s upcoming Cosmopolis. Self-interested, acquisitive and nihilistic, Pattinson goes very against type from his Edward Cullen character in the vampire films, leaning more toward the manipulative philanderer of Bel Ami, which opens June 8.

Move over Prometheus: David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson are here with a 30-second foreign teaser for Cosmopolis, their adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel about a young billionaire’s dark, demented and all-around catastrophic 24-hour Manhattan odyssey. And it looks amazing.

In fairness, it’s basically only 30 NSFW seconds of hyper-edited visuals, but what visuals: Times Square overrun with dinosaurs, Pattinson’s Eric Packer shooting a hole through his hand, limousine trysts and pee breaks, and all the quintessentially Cronenbergian glimpses of the perverse in the quotidian. Niftier still is the dialogue introducing the teaser, clipped in DeLillo’s own trademark staccato, hinting at a spiritual fidelity to the flawed but sui generis source material. It just looks and feels right. We’ll see how the other 100 minutes or so can compare later this spring, when Cosmopolis presumably debuts (and lands an American distributor) at Cannes.

Geez, David Cronenberg, way to corrupt our boy Robert Pattinson.

Before he was just a sparkly emo vampire, but now he’s a hyper-decadent rich dude humping and shooting everything in sight during the 30-seconds of bonkers bliss that is the “Cosmopolis” teaser trailer.

As if drawing a line in the sand to say “no more Mr. Nice Blooddrinker,” R.Pattz is taking things to a whole other level of bizarre as his billionaire character Eric Packer rides a limo across a pseudo-futuristic Manhattan where anything goes, including tons o’ sex, shooting his own hand and run ins with giant, fire-breathing dinosaur rats.

If Robert Pattinson is trying to break out of his Twilight persona, hooking up with visionary director David Cronenberg is certainly one way to go. As evidenced by the teaser trailer for Cosmopolis that has debuted, their collaboration is just what the actor needs for people to forget about that Edward guy.

A short teaser for Cosmopolis is here, and it is fantastic.

The Insider:

A new teaser trailer gives us a first glimpse at the film now and I am seriously impressed.

[David Cronenberg] is back to doing what he does best.

I’m not sure what other signs we need when it comes to expecting David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis to play at the Cannes Film Festival, but with a May 23 release already set for France and now a teaser trailer with French subtitles all that’s left is the official announcement…A new Cronenberg film is always something to get excited for.

The film, from the director of A History of Violence and Crash (the superior one with car fucking and crashing and fucking), looks insane, violent, magnificent, and in the evocative words of White Goodman, “Reaaaaal, freakah naughty”.

Den of Geek:

Cosmopolis, adapted from the novel of the same name by Dom DeLillo, looks like a return to the kind of assaultive filmmaking we’d associate with Cronenberg, and we’ve little doubt that it’ll be quite superb.

Flix 66:

AS much as I want to make fun of Robert Pattinson, I do think the guy has some talent and it’s evident in this lightning-quick teaser trailer (the whole thing is barely 30 seconds).  It looks like it has a great mix of violence, sex and mystery to keep it going…This sounds like typical fare for director David Cronenberg and a great opportunity for Robert Pattinson.

Bleeding Cool:

My hunch is that it’s going to be superb.

The first trailer for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis has emerged and it looks like the director has returned to his reassuringly disturbing ways…Robert Pattinson is set to give the performance of his career as young billionaire Eric Packer, who has a very eventful day.

Film School Rejects:

Whoa. Alright. If Robert Pattinson is trying to break out of his mold, he couldn’t have picked a better project than David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis.

Even in these first, brief snapshots, watching Pattinson inhabit the Cosmopolis universe, the world of Forks and the Cullens never seemed more distant or irrelevant. And when one considers the Breaking Dawn – Part 2 teaser was released only yesterday, it says something quite startling about Pattinson’s believability and immersion in the role of Eric Packer, that all you want to do after the teaser ends – is watch it again and again.

Oh No They Didn’t:

The David Cronenberg we’ve been missing since Spider is B A C K and Robert Pattinson is along for the ride.

Old Dave is coming back with Cosmopolis. The first teaser for the adaptation of Don Delillo’s novel has arrived online and it’s full of all the kink fans have come to expect from Cronenberg. It also puts to rest any worries about the casting of Robert Pattinson, who seems to fit into this world perfectly.

Indiewire/The Playlist:

It looks, to be frank, absolutely brilliant, and it’s certainly dampened any doubts we might have had for the time being. And R-Patz? Damned if he doesn’t look, in the very brief glimpses, right at home.

Hey U Guys:

I don’t know if this trailer would be classed as a red band trailer but I think it’s as close to red band as you can get without getting it actually being so….pretty raunchy and hard hitting….it does look pretty great from the 34 second trailer that we have here.

Premiere (France):

Robert Pattinson is sexy and violent in Cosmopolis teaser.

(Thank you Dalva for translation)

After his Twilight years, Cosmopolis is the movie that should get him from poster boy status to that of a major actor. And as short as the trailer is, it reveals the magnetic force of R-Patz (the scene in which he strolls in the alley, monstrous), his fearlessness and radicality of register changes performed (RP is aimed at by a half-naked prostitute, shoots up his hand with a .38 and roams NY clubs).

Up and Comers:

As the British actor looks to shed his Twilight image, and the famed director aims to gain back some of the critical acclaim that rumours would suggest he has recently lost, we see Pattinson’s Eric Packer shoot himself in the hand, have sex in a limosine and ask us darkly to “show me something I don’t know”.

Actually, it looks like Pattinson is showing us something we don’t know.

Horror Smorgasbord:

Can you survive a journey into the mind of David Cronenberg.  His movies are twisted, depraved and fucking genius in my opinion.  Even though Twi-hards will see Mr. Pattinson’s name on the poster this role will be nothing like they are probably use to seeing from the actor.  Either way it’s a Cronenberg film so sign me up

The teaser, while brief, is intriguing and definitely looks to have the cerebral Cronenberg touch he is so well known for as well as some serious gnarly violence.

Down With Film:

Okay so that is one hell of a teaser trailer. It looks like Cronenberg is really on to a winner here!! Could this be the role I finally fall for Robert Pattinson?

TAKE THAT you “critics”. Gooo Rob show them something they refuse to admit: that you are a genius actor, who will only get better with time.

  • Karen (@Kazrob69)

I’m just loving these responses. It seems that fans are welcoming David Cronenberg back into the fold and genre that he excels at and are seeing Rob in a whole new light. Whats amazing them is that Rob seems to fit right in.
But we already knew that…tell us something we don’t know, critics…

    Mindblowing excellence.

    • http://gardenlilie gardenlilie

That’s right!!! Tell us something WE don’t know…you said it right.
We need a limo party or something?!

  • krisztina László

We could have known Cronenberg is a genious and like he said Pattinson could show more from himself and his talent than we could see so far.In my opinion this is a chance to him to step out Twilight’s world and mostly good guy roles.
I can’t wait to see tha all film!

  • Kiri Dalziel (@ckk1000)

Wow fucking Wow,loving the reactions to this trailer, next stop for Rob,Oscar!!!

Since I saw Robert in one of his early films I wantet to see him as a killer. Maybe something psychotic and bloody – this film is going to give me a glimpse of what I think he would be like in a role like… Hannibal Lecter or so. Just take a look on his favorite Actors – he is going to follow there steps.

  • Isabella

Wow is all that I can say, David has done it again, when he spoke about Robert, he said
you have never seen him like this before, and god he is absolutely right, he is brillient
in this role, hard, hot, violent, wow again. Kudos to David and Robert Pattinson
as you can see by some of the critics remarks above, in their own words wonderful…

  • shelly @sh6791

Wow just wow ,I’ve always loved Robert Pattinson but this is truly amazing! I see great things for this wonderful young man,I could see him being the next Jack Nicholson.just amazing!!

  • Dalva

Here’s a quick translation of the Premiere part in French, don’t have time to recheck it but you’ll get the drift, pretty cool stuff:

After his Twilight years, Cosmopolis is the movie that should get him from poster boy status to that of a major actor. And as short as the trailer is, it reveals the magnetic force of R-Patz (the scene in which he strolls in the alley, monstrous), his fearlessness and radicality of register changes performed (RP is aimed at by a half-naked prostitute, shoots up his hand with a .38 and roams NY clubs).

Yay, you guys, this is stupendous!!!
